SONKER FESTIVAL AT THE EDWARDS-FRANKLIN HOUSE
Public Event
West of Mount Airy near the community of Lowgap� the Sonker Festivavl on Oct. 3 from 1-5 honors the distinctive Appalachian deep-dish fruit or sweet potato pie called a"sonker."" Sponsored by the Surry County Historical Society� the event benefits the preservation of the two-hundred-year-old Edwards-Franklin House. Visitors can hear lots of old-time music and also eat lots of food� including� of course� sonkers. Bring a lawn chair for your own comfortable seating. Surry County, NC is also the location of the Surry Sonker Trail! Directions: From the intersection with I-77� go west on NC-89 one mile; then go left (south) on Beulah Road for one mile; and finally go right (west) on Haystack Road. The Edwards-Franklin House is three and one-half miles on the right. For additional regional information contact Mount Airy Visitor Center.
