This is in reference to the Surry Central/North Wilkes boys basketball game in which North lost 72-62. Behren's says in the newspaper that the reason they lost was because of bad decisions and turnovers as a result of playing too fast on offense. This he attributes to their aggressive defense. Coach, I have some commentary of my own whether you want to hear it or not. Yes, I agree that the players play aggressive defense by running around like chickens with their heads off. I'm not sure they understand help side and rotations. I appreciate their aggressive defense, but the problem is that the coach doesn't work on transition offense. If you're going to be a scrappy team that's aggressive on defense then you need to know what to do when you get the ball off of a steal. They have no clue how to run the break. The offense doesn't match the defense. Let me get this straight. You want them to scramble around like wild men on defense and then slow it down and run sets? Does this make sense to anyone who knows basketball? Shows me that he doesn't know what he's doing. And how about calling a time out when a team is on a 10-0 run? You were only down by 2 with two minutes left in the 3rd and then because of the run, you were down my 10 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Why are we saving the timeouts? Just some thoughts Behrens. Take it or leave it.

What is the record of the North boys Coaches? They have a telented bunch of kids (not as good as central) but i think its a fair question. Maybe coaching is the problem, it sure matters in every other sport right? as for a system, for them that will prove fatal....again, that seems like a coaching issue to me. Should be interesting to see how bad they screw up the JV / varsity mixture this yr. I AM SURE THEY WILL "CHOOSE" TO HAVE TWO LOSING TEAMS, we all know that's how you prove to be great coaches ! and keep the boosters happy.

Only weak coaches blame their own players for losing all the time. A bad season is one thing but a bad career is another. I hate to be the one to tell you, but sometimes it is the coach. If a program consistently loses, it is the coach. Good coaches develop a program. They work to develop their players at a young age. The coach has to work as well as the players. Just showing up and unlocking a gym doesn't constitute work. You have to get in there and actually develop them. Many don't want to do this, so the poor outcomes are blamed on the players. Sad but true.

Colonel.....that is the best statement shared on GOWILKES in a long time. This is not just fitting for North Wilkes but all of Wilkes County and several surrounding schools as well.

For years the Traphillians and Hayesinites have blamed coaches. Perhaps it is time to look in the mirror and realize many of these terrible coaches have left for other schools in other areas and have done quite well. Many times it is not the X's and the o's. It is the Jimmy's and the Joe's.

Ashe is primed to make a few rounds deep if the cards bounce their way. as someone previously stated, Shelby, West Caldwell, ***ings and East Rutherford set the bar. East Rutherford has received a transfer that is a stud and will be tough to beat. NW will be a tough out for the ladies as they have some talented girls coming back. The boys however will have to play very smart to makeup for the lack of size and athleticism. Greer from west will be able to carry his team to some victories and if he can get some support, they may be able to finish near the top.

Coach G,If the community is smart, he will be neither. The community talk may be nothing, but it's not just a few. He's had years to develop his players, so he can use the rebuilding excuse or the lack of talent. It doesn't matter what excuse is used. Pressure is on! We'll see.

Lady, I think the chances of North Wilkes having a winning season with the existing talent pool are very slim, but be careful about putting too much stock in the talk of the community. Most times, the talk of the community boils down to a few people talking that have an agenda or at least a hope that what they are saying is correct.

Really? Would he just be the AD and not coach basketball? The chances of the NWHS boys having a winning season are very slim!

No pressure or anything for the North Wilkes boys coach. The talk in the community is that he needs to have a winning season if he wants to remain the coach. So... No pressure at all. Hopefully the guys can somehow win despite who their coach is. If not, he can always move to another state again. Good luck!

Fan u seem to be particularly sensitive when someone has a different opinion than you do. And you are right, I did not watch a great deal of basketball this summer, but a friend of mine did tell me that Alleghany and their 420 students were able to bring a team up to Ashe this summer and win. With that said, I do not think summer or camp ball is a terribly good indicator of in season success because, the teams have not had time to gel into the TEAM that they will become during the regular season. Like many of the posters on here, I think the Huskies have some pretty impressive individual talent, and I wish them lots of success. It just seems that every year, the expectations for Ashe basketball get built up to unsustainable levels in the preseason

Im sure that Shelby..East Rutherford..West Calwell..Burlington ***ings will probably be the standards of athleticism at the 2A level. You guys should be good for this area.

This Ashe County team should be darn near unbeatable at the 2A level. Bittle, Price, Shuler, Ellis? Teams rarely have that much athleticism over a 5 year span. Ashe has it all on one team and every single one of those guys not even seniors.

Yes, Ashe boys has way more talent than any other conference school. I am assuming you didn't see any high schools play this summer. Alleghany and West Wilkes will be ok, but they do not have the depth of Ashe. By the way, I dont have anything against Coach Grubb. I never mentioned him. It sounds to me "CoachG" you are already in protective mode for him.

Come on fan4life. Way MORE talent than any other team. That is just another typical statement designed to make it Grubbs fault if they lose. Yes they have some good basketball players, and I am sure they will finish in the top 3 in the league. There is more to winning in basketball than having a group of talented individuals, the team that wins will be the one that learns to play together, and the grapevine indicates that this team has some very challenging kids to coach. They have some very talented players, but will they be the best team? I guess trips to Millers Creek and Alleghany will help decide if they will be way BETTER than everyone else.

Players to watch. Gregory at Starmount and Greer at West come into the season as POY leading candidates. But Gregory may be hurt by a supporting crew that is not nearly as good as last year, and Greer still has to learn to play both ends.

North Wilkes first game is Nov. 20th @ Forbush that's what on maxpreps.com. North's got for non-conference this year is Bandys, Mitchell, Patrick County, Bishop McGunness, Newton- Conover and in the Pine Lake Prep Christmas Tournament. North will start conference opener with Wilkes Central on Dec. 11th @ North.

Yes, WC girls just lost two players. Just so happens it was their best two. That's going to hurt.

My picks for comference champs are:

Boys: Ashe boys should win easily. They have way MORE talent than any other team.
Girls: Wilkes Central girls only lost 2 players off of last years team.
