Its just another banner to hang in a gym that says conf. champs..then they are knocked out of state playoffs in the first or second round by teams out of a tougher conf.

Pawpaw3: no need to go full speed or give 100% because the ones that are starting might lose their starting position. They can't let anyone else show what they have because they might have to let them play. If you want your grandson to get a fair shot I would suggest being a daddy coach (which shouldn't happen at the high school level), be a teacher, be a booster club member or someone who donates a lot of money to the program. Better yet I would move him somewhere where they do give everyone a fair shot and actually have a chance at winning something besides the mountain valley conference. Winning a state title is really something.

Most of your contact work should be done in drills and not 11 on 11 during the week. The speed at which practice is carried out is up to the coach (right or wrong). Just because kids play and practice football at different levels doesn't mean that practice makes perfect. The older generations always thinks the younger ones are softer, sometimes I agree. But the competition for these kids time today is much more that yesterday, so coaches have or should be more creative in selling the sport. Sometimes, that means thinking outside the box, just because it has always been that way, doesn't make it right now! But I also understand your point as well. Different times sometimes require different measures. No offense!

It was meant as an allegorical exchange to promote euphemistic expressions. No offense intended.

I believe i understand what he means from seeing some practices in the last 6 or 7 years..the boys dont go at a speed that will allow them to take anyones position from them. The teams from 10 to 15 years ago and further back were alot tougher and hard nosed than alot of teams of today. And if any parent whines cause there son is hurt by hitting in practice then he should not be out there in the first place. Many of these kids grow up in football organizations where they hit daily during the season and go wide open tackling and hitting..then they get to high school and it stops.

Really, most of the time they don't hit at game speed is due to the lack of depth. Most of the area high schools face this problem, and also colleges don't go at game speed in practice to keep injuries down. I understand old school but most coaches today are more concerned about how many plays and formations than can get in rather than technique. There are not enough practice before the first games to get offenses in and work on technique. Hope that makes since, it is a complicated balance and finding the right combination varies from year to year and teams.

They don't hit hard in practice cause don't want to hurt team mates. Plus, if they get hit hard in practice, went it's over with, the parents will be up in the face of the coaches fussing cause their kids got hurt and can't play in the games.

If your going to respond how about doing it with some common sense....the post is about why kids dont get to hit in practice and improve their spots on a team and also be able to tackle better in games.

Did you hit a car head-on in Drivers Ed class back in the day? Why not?

My grandson was telling me that now in football practice that they do not let the boys hit at game speed or even practice tackling. I watched a game friday night and saw several missed tackles and poor technique. What ever happened to earning a spot? And how do you work yourself into more playing time if you cant show 100% effort on the field? Im old school and we hit in practice and i truely believe it made us a better and tougher team. Those who performed and hit hard in practice earned a shot in a game. I would like to hear how others feel on this.
