I love going, but didn't get to go this year. Is Wilkes having one this year?

I respectfully disagree with Aficionados. I didn't go this year, but I usually do; in fact, GoSurry sponsored it for many years!

Just wondering, why didn't you guys sponsor it this year? Do you sponsor the one in Wilkes?

Aficionados, have you ever tried Stony Knoll's Shiraz? I'll grant you that it's not as good as the Australian Syrah's that I've had, but it's still excellent. Not too sweet, just a little fruity, and a hint of peppery. I like it, and it goes great with steak.

Am I enough of a snob to compare it to wines that are 3 and 4 times the cost? Nope. But at $12 or so for a bottle, I think it's great.

However, the wide majority of people that I've met prefer sweet wines, and I guess that's why the NC festivals focus on those. Weathervane is a great example, if you like sweet wines.

You might also like some of the wines from Windsor Run. They have a few wines that are blended with bourbon, so they're really closer to a fruity liquor than wine! They're not sickly sweet like a schnapps, though, and not quite as harsh as a cognac. They're worth trying, anyway.

People are so compliant.

Sparky, most don’t know what they are talking about. I heard a chef (he’s well known on TV) on a podcast recently comment on this. He said he and his fellow chefs at conventions would go to the bar And pick out a rube to see what they could get the person to agree with they tasted. Most of the time they just repeated whatever he said.

With all this rain the creek is up. They need to keep the rescue squad on stand-by. You can walk right through the tents and fall in the creek.

I haven't been to the festival in Elkin, but I did go to Tanglewood a few years back for their Wine Festival.

Lots of folk. Lots of tasting.

I don't know the language of wine and am not all that familiar with the etiquette of such events.

I did listen to the folk around me. What I heard was a lot of folk who didn't seem to know much more than myself trying to use a language they didn't know. I concluded from my listening that all the wines were excellent, maybe even exceptional. No one could look at the vendor and admit they just didn't like the offering.

I like to pair that experience with YouTube videos of Sommeliers tasting and commenting on various high profile wines.

Excellent is a far stretch. NC wines are what people start with then work up to real wine.

While it's true that there are a lot of overly sweet wines, this is the common case in North Carolina. But there are some excellent dryer wines, too. Stony Knoll, for example, has an excellent Shiraz. And Carolina Heritage has a Riesling that could compete with any of the German ones I've had.

Last year there were also several good breweries set up there.

It's relatively inexpensive to walk around and taste all of the wines that you would otherwise have to buy just to see if you even like them. You might find some that you might like, and you can buy them by the bottle (or case) if you like them.

It's probably winding down now, though, so you better hurry if you want to catch them before they leave!

What they may lack in quality they more than make up for with their “better than you” attitude.

It’s a bunch of crappy local wines that are really more like alcoholic Kool aid instead of wine. But it’s a cheap buzz.
