That's a great idea. School and sporting events can pack local school gyms. And parents (and grandparents) are prime advertising demographics.

you might want to consider one of the banners at some of the schools I know Dobson Elem is looking for banner sponsers for their gym. I think they run $150 for the first year and $100 for the following years. first year includes the purchase price of the banner. Don't quote me though I might have the prices wrong but there are over 800 students at that one school if your interested I can get you the phone number to DES so you can get more info.

Only two events come to mind, one is the Fiddler's Convention at SCC in March I think. The other is poker runs sponsored by Granduer Motorcyles in Jonesville. The route usually goes to King but stops in Pilot Mountain, comes through Dobson and stops again in Elkin.

I agree with publicservice. I occasionally scan the classifieds looking for something I may need/want and as public stated, all listings default to GoWilkes.
That's not entirely correct. When someone posts an ad, they are given the option of copying it to neighboring counties, so it's true that you'll see some overlap.
But before we did this, people in Surry would go to GoWilkes to post their classified ad, and skip GoSurry altogether. This change lets the people in Surry see more ads that are actually located in Surry.
I also agree with the suggestion of booths at community gatherings. We've set up at events in the past, but usually don't have a lot of return from it because we're not actually selling anything. We can pass out brochures or fliers, but those usually end up in the trash long before anyone takes them home.
We do sponsor a lot of events in Wilkes, though, and I'll probably pursue that in Surry, too. We sponsored the wine festival a few years ago, but I think we got lost in the mix with several other sponsors, so if we do that again it would need to be a presenting sponsor. It's a bit more of an investment, but we usually see a real increase in traffic from something like that. The hard part is finding out about the events about 6 months ahead of time, then figuring out who to contact! LOL
Can you guys suggest a few good Surry events that would be starting around March 2013?

I also agree with the suggestion of booths at community gatherings. This week there are Mayberry Days in Mt. Airy and in a few weeks, the same city will welcome hundreds of thousands for The Autumn Leaves Festival. With a booth at these functions, thousands of Internet users will learn of the "GO" network serving the state of North Carolina and beyond.

Personally, I am glad GoSurry doesn't get the traffic that GoWilkes gets. What traffic GoSurry does get is a lot more relaxing and fun to read much like the old days of GoWilkes.
GoSurry seems to have a different breed of posters who are kinder and polite. They have conversations of interests and rarely do you see the bad poster. People who post on GoSurry imho a much better poster and the types of posters I'd hope hang out for a very long time.
GoWilkes seems to have become for a few people nothing but a format to Push down their political agenda and the home of Name Calling, bullying and threats. They push their agenda's down your throat Every day and it gets really old seeing the same bunch daily controlling the board with their same old same old crap.
I've got to the point that I dislike even looking at the community voice because all it is, one thread after another either bashing Obama, Romney or religion. Either that or a constant name calling thread or post after post. You can't have a good debate on GoWilkes any longer or even a friendly discussion. I've read where people say that it will settle down after the election. BS to that, it has never settled down concerning politics and religion on GoWilkes, that is the daily event! The election will pass but the BS threads concerning politics will go right on and on.
You've got about 15 to 20 posters that seems to constantly start threads either by one screen name or another and if you dare disagree with one of these names. You're going to be bashed, trashed, bullied by several others until you just get sick of it or change the screen name you have.
All that being said, It seems it's the popular thing to be doing and it seems several people like that sort of crap so let'em have it. Keep it on GoWilkes and let GoSurry be the better site because it appears it is the better place to have good old fashioned threads with good friendly discussions. It also seems you can have an actual debate and do it friendly on GoSurry and that says a lot about GoSurry posters.
In the long run, GoSurry will gain posters and one day it would not surprise me if it becomes more popular than GoWilkes. As long as it keeps to it's roots in Good Threads, Friendly discussions and Good Debates without the crap. It will, just wait and see when it catches on it will be the site of Choice.

Wilkes is very large in area but everything (governmental, business and majority of popualtion) is centered in the Wilkesboros. Surry is much smaller in area and has at least four different business centers (Mount Airy/Elkin/Dobson/Pilot Mountain). This at least triples the advertising effort and unlike Wilkes there is not a singular "Community Voice" in Surry. Similarly it at least appears that a majority of other categories (Classifieds, Personals, etc.) are the same for Wilkes, Surry, Yadkin and possibly other neighboring counties. Since Wilkes users have longer established log-ons they can log onto GoWilkes and check all of those categories for the whole area. So perhaps to have a better sales pitch to potential Surry advertisers as well as increase participation to other non-Wilkes sites it might be a good idea to have dedicated info for each county. I know if I were looking for a used car (for example) I'd separately log onto Surry, WIlkes Yadkin and any other neighboring site. Whereas now I could simply log onto Gowilkes and check them all and the traffic statistcs would only reflect a visit to GoWilkes. And while the visitor statistics are unquestionably accurate - that was an apple to orange and out of context reply to the original post. Anybody that can count to 100 can randomly sample GoWilkes Community Voice and the number of "active" participants is much closer to a handfull than it is to 15,000 a day. Best of luck with the advertising. A booth at a Pilot Mountain Cruise-In or an Elkin Pumpkin festival could probably a whole lot more legitimate leads than Facebook,

That's partially correct. GoWilkes is now 10 years old, while GoSurry is about 2 1/2 years old. GoSurry is infinitely busier than GoWilkes was after 2 years.
It's not true, though, to say that GoWilkes only has a handful of people generating the posts. In fact, Google Analytics shows that the posts are generated by about 15,000 different IP addresses a day, which would be a low estimate (eg, everyone at Lowes offices has the same IP, so a potential 1,000 people would only count as 1 IP address).
The biggest obstacle we have, though, is a lack of a good advertising venue in Surry. Newspaper ads are traditionally too expensive for the return (newspapers do not traditionally reach our main demographic), and there are very few billboard options. Billboards really helped build the traffic on GoWilkes, but there aren't many billboards in Surry.
We regularly advertise on Facebook, but there are only about 4,000 accounts on there within 10 miles of Elkin or Mt. Airy, with the majority of those accounts belonging to children (which is also not our demographic). So again, that becomes a fairly expensive ad for a very low return. And realistically, we already have more traffic in Surry than Facebook does, so a lot of our ads are probably being shown to people that are already using GoSurry.
I'm open to suggestions on marketing in Surry, though. I'd love to build it up more, there just doesn't seem to be a good marketing venue in place.

Lots of reasons but probably a) GoWilkes has been established longer b) Wilkes has maintained a very high unemployment rate so more people with spare time to be online c) Despite appearance, less than a handful of people generate the majority of the posts there. d) The Surry community is less divided along political, social and economic lines
