Hey special you are right there with them, part of the problem---you only want to make excuses and find someone to blame. You again have insulted the dogs intelligence.

Underdog....how about considering how many people of Surry County that have animals and don't feel the need to spay/neuter their animals? Or people who get tired of their pets and set them out. There are 1,000's & animal control gets the bad name. Why don't you be the hero & give all these animals homes, since you are quick to point fingers. It's an ugly reality.

Why are you insulting the dogs intelligence? Do you realize that there are numerous counties with populations 4 times the size of surry and they do a fine job at their animal control.

Your best use of your trying to blow smoke up the dogs as* would be to email your county manager and commissioners and demand it be fixed immediately.

Also, the name is ANIMAL CONTROL....not ANIMAL RESCUE or ANIMAL ADOPTION, there are other organizations for that.

@FixNC....

Do you realize that a NO KILL shelter 99% of the time take in only bloodline/breeds of dogs? They turn down muts, because they know that many don't want mixed breeds....Do you realize that in that percentage of Surry's animal shelter's killings were ALL animals they put down, for instance, ferel cats, aggresive/dangerous dogs & cats. YES maybe their numbers are a bit ridiculous and they do need more effort to save the animals, but they are being attacked for also protecting people. I know for a fact (because it was my land) they killed atleast 100-150 ferel cats on 1 acre, have you ever seen a ferel cat? A racoon is more tame.

I'm just saying that they are being attacked and people are throwing at numbers, but not looking at the whole situation. So the next time someone calls 911 because a pitbull won't let them in their house, or there are two mangey old dogs walking around a church, you go get them and try to give them to someone. You can't adopt out aggresive dogs, would you want that responsibility of it harming a child or adult for that matter? There is always 2 sides to a story....

@Somekindofspecial:

Spay/neuter is only part of the solution. Not one single animal in the Surry pound today will be saved by anyone spaying or neutering another animal. The only way animals in the Surry County pound (and others just like it) will live is if the director and staff of those places choose to save them instead of killing them. (Read this if you’d like to know more: http://www.nathanwinograd.com/?p=9022)

Blaming the public for shelter killing is an excuse, not a strategy for saving lives. Animals die in shelters because shelter directors find it easier to kill them and place the blame on “the public” than to save them. There are currently 41 (and counting) OPEN-ADMISSION NO KILL shelters in the US (see here: http://www.no-killnews.com/). Know what those shelter directors are doing instead of killing animals and blaming other people for the slaughter? They are working WITH their communities (you know, the people kill pound directors like to blame) to implement strategies that have proven effective at increasing adoptions, decreasing shelter intake and finding care for the sick, injured and behaviorally challenged animals who need the most help. The formula is here: http://www.nokilladvocacyce...-equation/

All demonizing the public does is drive them away from the shelter and make them not want to adopt from it or volunteer for it. But helping the public make responsible decisions (like providing easy access to affordable spay/neuter) invites them to become part of the solution. But ultimately, the only way things will change and places like the Surry County pound is with a director who embraces a mission of saving animals instead of killing them.

Congratulations surry county, the worst adoption record in the state.

You are some animal murdering people over there. Why has the director of animal control still hold that title in surry.
