I overheard a conversation with the AD speaking of the next 1A realignment and it would include Starmount, Elkin, East Wilkes, Alleghany, Mt Airy, and East Surry.

The important thing to remember is that the NCHSAA has changed their realignment system from 25% across the board in every class to 20% 1A and 4A schools and 30% 2A and 3A schools. There will be less big 1AA schools and more small 2A schools along with more small 3A schools and less big 3AA's.

As for North Surry they were a solid 3A school from 1967-2000. They had no problems with that and had no problems when they went down to 2A in 2001. In fact they played in the Foothills 3A along with Wilkes Central and Forbush with the Iredell county schools from 1985-1996. The problem with their increase in 3A in 2004 was due to a mis-calculation in the daily attendance that year. The computer put about 10-15 kids that were in the EC program into the average daily membership data when they shouldn't have been there and and it made it 1090 or around there when it was 1075 so they got off of it as the biggest 2A that year. Turns out they had a huge senior class as well because their numbers dropped in 2005. As for the conference they were going to be put with the 3A Forsyth and Guilford schools who honestly didn't want them in that conference. It wasn't the fact North was raising a fit but it was the fact that neither side wanted what the state made so it made sense to mutually take North out. The MVAC was missing a team for that realignment to even things out non-conference wise and none of the teams in the conference wanted to go to either Hibriten or West Caldwell so it all worked out.

Here's how it all looks based off 2014's ADM numbers:

1A- Elkin 391, North Stokes 431, Alleghany 449, Bishop McGuiness 457, Mt Airy 533, East Wilkes 547, Atkins 603, Starmount and South Stokes with 633, East Surry 642

2A- West Wilkes 689, Carver 707,North Wilkes 738,Walkertown 743,Surry Central 792,Wilkes Central 862
North Surry 900, Forbush 903, Ashe County 949, West Stokes 975

The wild cards for the area look to be N/W Wilkes, South Stokes, Carver, East Surry, Ashe, Atkins and West Stokes. They hold the cards for how it will go. South's fallen to a definite 1A minus a miraculous increase, Atkins and Carver are iffy due to their county's policy on open enrollment, West and Ashe both gained dramatically the last two years. While Ashe lost most of what they had in 2013 that put's the focus on them to see how they will do this year. If they gain a lot again who knows.

The NCHSAA divides the schools by size and puts them currently into 4 classifications from where the conferences are then set up. The last Realignment had 399 schools so roughly 100 were put into each classification. Conferences were then set up geographically from there. Split conferences are not ideal but at present a necessary evil to hopefully keep away from longer travel times and distances.

There is a much bigger world than the MVAC and in most cases the level of play overall is higher. There had been some talk of going to 6 classifications the last realignment but it was I believe voted down by the board of directors.

Some conferences have as many as 9 teams in them. All of the same classification. There is no one si ze fits all way to do this. Scheduling can become horrific for smaller number conferences. The NCHSAA does a great job with what they have to deal with and put out.

Any school over 600 should be 2a.. 900+ should be pushing 3a .. no exceptions.. Would really change most success for most Sports teams.. Esp. East Surry, Starmount, West Wilkes. WC.. in 2a conf .. Forbush Ash WS NS would be a Joke in 3a LOL!! But it would be fair #s wise...

But it were the cut line is. Most 1A schools 150 or so more students than Elkin. Logistics are also looked at which is why we've had the 1A/2A that is probably gone, but in all reality where could you stick North Surry or Ashe in a 3A? North with the Iredell Schools but thats still pushing it.

North Surry , Wilkes Central and Forbush have a lot more students than West Wilkes.. That should be the only way to measure whether they or to be in one conference or another. I believe it has more to do with competition in some of the sports. (North Surry was once told they had to go to a 3A conference and they went balistic.,but with that many students they should.. There lies some of the problem

North Surry has between 875-900 students. North Wilkes has a little under 700. North Wilkes is right on the 1A/2A cut line. Same with West Wilkes.

The schools need to be aligned according to the number of students. Some schools are just afraid to be in certain groups. For example does : West Wilkes and Wilkes Central have the same amount off students? North Surry and North Wilkes ? I just wonder if anyone knows the numbers on all the schools for the local conference teams 1A , 2A 3A Something looks a little strange to me????

What would be your idea of which schools in new conference if there's one? aka. all 2A conference must have 8, no more split conference!! Remember, it's just an idea!! Will tell mine idea later.
