I think that the top two Wilkes teams central and west will battle it out for conference this year along with Ashe and Allegheny. Greer always seems to find a way to keep his team afloat throughout the year for west since hes been in high school. Central hasn't been the team they usually are for the past two years but have a few returning players that showed a lot of potential in some big games last year but they have also lost some key leadership that will need to be picked up by returning players this year. Ashe and Allehgany both have picked there programs up in the past years a lot and with there size in the paint and guard play up top will give any team a run for there money as long as they want to.

Even though Behrens at North Wilkes is trying to mock what Coach Shumate did to the girls' program, he still does not have the basketball knowledge to lead these kids to the win column and make it a successful program. North Wilkes dead last for the second straight year. Good job coaching staff

Ashe has some really good kids moving up. Central has some good athletes moving up. Starmount is losing a lot but Horton is a good coach. Alleghany lost a ton but a gun are very well coached.

Who has the best kids moving to varsity in the MVAC? Think Ashe won the JV league. Was West second?

Exactly, it's all a guess. Alleghqjynis losing way too ,ugh to be considered the front runner though. Their 15 minutes of fame are over.

Who does West have other than Greer that will make them strong?

Don't see how Alleghany finishes 1st. West would be my guess by the conference will be wide open.

Basketball season just ended. So here is a question for the real MVC fans that keep up with what is going on. How do the boys finish next year? Lot of Seniors leaving the league this year, balance of power may shift. I will throw out my thoughts and I welcome yours.

1. Alleghany

2. West

3. Ashe

4. Starmount

5. Central

6. East

7. North

8. Elkin

Just reading through these posts from earlier in the season and wondering how fan for life feels about his Ashe county prediction at this point. JV success does not always lend itself to the same success at the varsity level. Lots of teams have significant Freshmen and Sophomores moved up.

wow fan4life. I am an Ashe county guy but you have to be real. The only thing more confusing than putting Ashe at #1 is putting Alleghany at #4. Coach Macnight or his buddy the assistant could play point guard and they would win the conference or at least finish ahead of Ashe. They have got a couple of players at Alleghany that are the real deal and I am not even talking about that monster #87 who plays football that they will have inside.

Fan4life really Ashe #1? and Alleghany #4? Alleghany will win the conference 2 of the best players and the sophomore point guard they have is just as good if not better than the one from last year not to mention the depth and height the bench has anyone of them can impact on any night. Starmount is 2nd with ashe who is young but tall and west a toss up for 3rd. Central and Elkin are sleepers this year and North and East will just have to fight it out for last

My thoughts...
1. Ashe last yrs jv team wouldve finished 4th in (varsity) conference last yr
2. Starmount lots of returning players
3. West returning entire team
4. Alleghany lost PG from last years team.
5. Wilkes Central
6. East Wilkes
7. Elkin
8. North Wilkes

Interesting and thought provoking post there Coach. Not that I disagree for a moment with your first 2 but 2 years in a row of 1A teams leading the conference would be amazing. I might put Ashe ahead of West because they will be bringing up some significant size from that JV team. Expect Alleghany to be real good with one of the best one two combinations that the league has had in a while. Not to mention that they return 4 of the 5 starters from last years team including a 6' 5" post player that will be a 3rd year Junior. Starmount should be real strong without a real star, they just field a team that is extremely balanced and can all play. Ashe returns all of their perimeter players from last year and will surround a couple of real legitimate inside guys. West will return the Junior Greer who is an outstanding scorer and bell is a pretty good compliment, but as with last year, size will be a problem. Elkin could be a sleeper as they return most of last years extremely athletic team which includes King. Not sure what to expect from Central, but I have heard that they had a transfer come in who plays receiver in football that is a real good player, and of course the halls are full of athleticism. At North I assume that Church will return and he will be joined by the Wallis kid that scored so well on the JV squad. Hoping that East can shake free from the struggles that they have confronted over the last few years.

Should be a very fun basketball conference this year, because all the kids from last year have grown up.

With basketball practice under way, what are your thoughts on the order of finish this year for the boys MVC.

MY thoughts are

1 Alleghany ( Return last years player of the year and the most COMPLETE guard in the conference)

2 Starmount ( Return most of last years team except Cass. Not much help from JV's though)

3 West Wilkes ( Return their whole team which includes the best offensive player in the conference)

4 Ashe County ( Return most of last years team and tons of help coming from an awesome JV team)

5 Elkin ( Return nearly all of last years team including Cody King who was hard to guard last year)

6 Wilkes Central ( Lost several players last year but always athletic)

7 North Wilkes ( Hopefully Church gets to return but who else)

8 East Wilkes ( Struggles continue)

I expect the league from top to bottom to be much better than last year with most of last years all conference players returning Best 4 or 5 players in the league will be back. Of course the conference had a representative (Alleghany) in the regionals last year.
