Jason Howell, the pitching coach at Georgia Tech and former West Wilkes Blackhawk, played in the Boston Red Sox organization. Marc Elliott, another former Blackhawk, played independent ball as well. I am not trying to take anything away from Bare, but both of these guys had much better high school and college careers. There have also been several guys play college baseball at a high level from Wilkes County who graduated from their respective colleges/universities but that didn't get an opportunity to continue their careers in the professional ranks.

I don't know the circumstances at LR, but they are having a bad year and probably wouldn't have redshirted a guy that could truly help the program. Most people do not realize the significant jump in the talent level from HS to college and then on to pro ball. If it was a struggle in college, it is safe to say it will be another giant step up to the pros. Good luck...

I played high school baseball at Wilkes Central with a guy named Roy Brooks, a left handed pitcher. Hardest thrower I ever played with. He signed with the Cubs in 1959 and played about 3 or 4 seasons in the minors.

Kenny Brooks, I think no relation, also a very good pitcher at Wilkes Central, signed with the White Sox in 1968, and also played about 3 seasons in the minors.

I guess high school is no different than college. He got killed in both of them.

Former North Wilkes pitcher, Dustin Bare, will be signing a professional baseball contract for the Windy City Thunderbolts of the Frontier Professional Baseball League.

I was able to talk to someone who was close to Bare and it wasn't a surprise that this was going to happen says an anonymous source. "Bare redshirted at Lenoir Rhyne University but that was his plan. This was meant to happen ever since the beginning of the school year." Also stated was that Bare has been planning this move for a while. Its no coincidence. Source says that Bare stated "College baseball was fun but it's no different than high school ball, and since I have been working with professional help thats where I want to be. A professional and start from there in order to make it to where I have always dreamed of being."

Bare has worked with many professional knuckleball pitchers. He has worked with Hall of Fame knuckleball pitcher Phil Niekro whom signed in 1959 with the Milwaukee Braves. He debuted in 1964 and retired in 1984 from the Braves organization. Bare has also worked with Zachary Staniewicz from Concordia College in NY. He pitched in the Orioles minor league organization and played in the Australian Baseball League in the winter of 2013 setting a .54 ERA through 16 IP. He was released by the Orioles in 2014. Bare worked closely with Niekro and Staniewicz and then had the opportunity to meet with David Papa, an Independent Professional League player and knuckleball pitcher.

Bare will also be the next professional baseball player out of Wilkes County since the Welborn brothers whom pitched in the Mets organization.

"This is my next step and I have to take it. Its a honor to play professional baseball, independent or affiliated. This is where my career will start, the best part about it is wondering where you'll end up." - Dustin Bare
